Gwanda State University successfully hosted its inaugural Fundraising Golf Tournament atHarry Allen Club in Bulawayo last Saturday.
The tournament attracted at least seventy (70) golfers from across institutions, corporates, organisations, companies and individuals. The tournament was a testament to the University’s efforts to raise third stream income and to encourage participation in sporting activities to achieve a well-balanced healthy life.
Officiating this colourful event during the Prize Giving Ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor Professor Doreen Zandile Moyo said that such tournaments were going to be a permanent feature on the calendar of events for Gwanda State University, as the institution strives to grow and develop through sport, and particularly golf.
“This august audience may wish to know that Gwanda State University is a young and up- coming national University which started off as a college of the National University of Science and Technology (NUST). It was officially established as a stand-alone University through an Act of Parliament (Chapter 25:30, No5 of 2016). The GSU mandate is specialisation in animal and veterinary sciences, irrigation engineering and management, mining engineering, environmental engineering and ecosystem restoration. Presently, the University has two Campuses namely, the Epoch Mine Campus in Filabusi, where the University is currently operating from and the Gwanda Town Campus which is yet to be developed. The thrust of the University as evidenced by the programmes that are currently on offer and those that will be offered in future, is to exploit fully the factor endowment of the Matabeleland South Province”, alluded the Vice-Chancellor.
She also added that Matabeleland South Province is very rich in minerals, flora and fauna and is extremely amenable to large scale livestock production.
She added that upon realising that the development of the University could not be left to the Government alone, her administration made a conscious decision to take the growth and development of GSU to the people, hence this inaugural fundraising golf tournament.
As we gather to celebrate the remarkable achievements of our talented golfers, I am reminded of the dedication, perseverance and sportsmanship that the sport of golf embodies. Golf is not just a game it is a journey of self-improvement, patience and resilience. Each swing, each putt and each round played, is testament to the hardwork and passion that our players bring to the course”, she added.
Congratulating the golfers who participated, she underscored that the University recognises not only the winners but also every participant who has shown exceptional commitment and spirit.
“To our champions, congratulations on your outstanding performance. To those who may not have won today, remember that every challenge faced on the course, and every lesson learnt, brings you one step closer to your goals”, she added.
She also encouraged the august audience to continue to celebrate the spirit of golf and look forward to many more successful tournaments.
Among the speakers who took stage during the ceremony were representatives from Old Mutual and Calm Health. They pledged to immensely support the upcoming golf tournaments
in future.
